Free Downloads Freeware Easy CD DVD Burner

Free Easy Burner is a CD/DVD burning and authoring program that supports burning data and audio CD’s and DVD’s, copying CD’s and DVD’s (by ripping and burning ISO’s), and Ripping audio CD’s into MP3’s.

If you want a small CD/DVD burning program that performs all standard functions without many frills, then Free Easy Burner will cater for all of your burning needs (pun intended heheh).

Important Note [8/13/2007]: since first reviewing this program on 2/3/2007 it has become adware, despite still being billed as freeware on the author’s site. This means that as of version 1.2.43 the program, while fully functional, nonetheless displays ads (albeit harmless ones) within its interface. However you can still download version 1.2.21 of this program, which is fully functional and ad-free, from the link at the bottom of this page.

The following is a list of what this program can do:

* Supports dual-layer DVD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW.
* Burns Data CD’s and DVD’s: allows dragging and dropping of files and folders, will verify and/or finalize your CD/DVD.
* Will copy CD’s and (unencrypted) DVD’s by ripping an ISO image on hard drive and burning it back.
* Will write to ISO (i.e. can create ISOs from any collection of files and/or folder). Will also burn ISO files.
* Burns Audio CD’s; will convert your audio files into a playable audio CD. Supported audio file formats are: WAV, WMA, MP3, OGG, FLAC, AAC, and M4A.
* Rips audio CD’s to MP3 or WAV file formats. Supports automatic FreeCDDB tag information retrieval.

This is great, straightforward freeware that does the job very well and looks good to boot. Nice simply functional user interface; I recommend higly.

Compatibility: Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista.

Free download freeware Spyware Terminator software

This is one of the most exciting free programs I’ve come across in a while. Finally a very good antispyware program that you can install and forget, knowing that you have effective real time protection with automatic live updates.

This might not sound so revolutionary but it is, because most good freeware antispyware programs, including well known titles such as Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, and Spyware Blaster do not feature automatic updates unless you switch to the paid version. For me this always meant that there really isn’t a good freeware antispyware, and that a better option would be the (commercial) SpySweeper or Spyware Doctor. Until now, that is.I’ve been using this program for a while and am very satisfied with it. My brother recently had a nasty spyware infection that some of the other (free + non-free) antispyware programs could not effectively handle, but that Spyware Terminator resolved beautifully.

Note: Spyware Terminator integrates a free open source antivirus software named ClamVir to scan your computer. Although this is a good feature that I recommend, ClamVir does not offer memory resident antivirus protection and you should not consider it to be sufficient antivirus protection. (I.e. use Spyware Teminator for Spyware protection and install another Antivirus program for protection against viruses).

The following are some of Spyware Terminiator’s features:

* Fast Scan, Full Scan, Customized Scan, Scheduled Scan
* ClamAV antivirus integration (including ClamAV database updates)
* Effective removal of threats, including blocked files on reboot. Quarantines threats. Allows removal of locked files
* Real Time Protection with autmatic live updates.
* HIPS function monitors files for suspicious changes and asks user to intervine if changes to system are not recognized in it’s database.
* File analysis option allows sending of suspicious files to the developers for deep analysis.
* Restore computer to earlier or default setting

Visit the features page from the developer’s site for in-depth features. Scroll to the bottom for a comparison chart.

A free alternative to: SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, etc…

Free downloads AVG antivirus software

Free downloads AVG antivirus software

AVG is a 100% free antivirus program that offers real time protection, on demand scanning, and email scanning. It also features automatic updates and a very small footprint that will not slow down your system. It does exactly what it promises and does it really well.

Although AVG is well known as a free antivirus program, I wanted to review it because the new version 7.5 (Oct 2006) seems to offer better protection than its predecessors

First, the good news:

* AVG is a complete antivirus solution that features dependable real time protection as well on-demand virus scanning
* AVG features auto updates, making it a good install-and-forget solution that you do not have to manually keep updating (some other ‘free’ antivirus programs will force you to keep doing this in order to incentivize you to buy the paid version).
* AVG has a remarkably small footprint, is light on memory use, and generally will not hog your system resources. Upon replacing Norton AV with AVG I noticed that my system boot time was three times faster and my system in general was noticeably more responsive, especially the time it took to acess files. If you suspect that your antivirus software is making everything unaccpetably sluggish then I recommend that you experiment with removing it and installing AVG.
* AVG provides email virus protection for both incoming and outgoing emails. This is not to be taken for granted, since it is the one reason why AVG is my choice over Antivir, another excellent free antivirus which is excellent for both real time and on demand scanning but somehow does not offer email scanning. Given that I receive 100+ spam emails a day on one of my POP3 email accounts, this feature is really important to me.
* Its Windows Vista ready

Second, the not-so-good news
* Although AVG is very good at detecting known virusus, it’s so-called heuristic detection abilities have been somewhat lacking. Heuristic detection is a protection against viruses that are yet unknown based on observing the patterns of behavior of legitimate code vs. viruses (it is a kind of ‘generic’ virus protection). According to the Grisoft website, however, the new AVG upgrade to ver. 7.5 promises “improved virus detection based on better heuristics and NTFS data streams scanning”. All of the antivirus software comparisons that I could find tested older versions however, so until new comparison test are published it is not clear just how much this has improved. But the improvement seems to be significant, since the Grisoft website states that “recent certifications include VB100%, ICSA, and West Coast Labs Checkmark”. The West Coast Labs certification in particular is something that AVG previously lacked while AVAST, another free antivirus soft, had.
* The free version of AVG is stripped of the spyware/adware detection component of the paid version. You could download and install this seperately, but the free version is significantly handicapped. This is not a huge concern, since there are many freeware antispyware programs that you could install seperately that offer excellent protection. Click here for reviews of some of these on FreewareGenius.
* From what I’ve read AVG has been associated with a high rate of false positives. I’m not sure if this is still the case, but I do know that this has not been an issue in my experience.
* Predictably, there is no technical support offered to users of the free edition. If you feel that this is something you need then its probably worth it to buy the paid ‘pro’ version.

The verdict:

AVG is a program that keeps getting better and better, and manages to do so without growing into a resource intensive monster that takes over your machine. I’ve looked at many antivirus comparisons, and it seemed like the more recently the test was conducted the the better AVG performed.

I am very comfortable recommending AVG as your primary virus protection software, provided you (a) have adequate seperate protection against spyware/malware, and (b) you have a good firewall running. Currently on my machine I am running a combination of AVG antivirus, Spyware Terminator, Spyware Blaster, and Comodo Free Firewall, and I haven’t experienced any problems despite the fact that I am constantly downloading/installing and testing out all manner of files/programs on my machine, including some that may be somewhat dubious.

Free downloads Freeware Dexpot

Dexpot

Dexpot will allow you to set up and customize virtual desktops within Windows such that each can behave as a seperate workspace with its own icons and runnning apps. It offers powerful tools to customize and manage these virtual desktops in a nice intuitive graphical user interface.
AdsSpy: 3 sites by this AdSense ID

Let’s say that you use your computer for work, and that you also use it, say, to edit personal videos, as well as to do a little bit of freelance web design on the side. With Dexpot you can keep all of your work icons, applications, files, and links on one desktop, all of your video editing icons/apps on another desktop, and all of the web design stuff on yet another virtual desktop.

You can also be running your web design app(s) so they’re only visible in the design desktop, your work applications in the work desktop, and so on.

Here’s what you need to know about this program:

* It creates up to 20 virtual desktops; you can navigate these through the system tray icon or using a number of cool looking gizmos that you can choose from.
* Dextop offers high customizability: each desktop can have its own name, icons/files/shortcuts, wallpaper, screen resolutions, running apps, transparency of windows, etc. You can also set rules for each desktop, e.g. to open a certain app when you enter a certain desktop for the first time or every single time, etc.
* These desktops are overlaid ‘virtually’ on top of your ‘real’ desktop. So, for example, although you only see the icons that belong to desktop#2 when you’re inside it, all of these are actually in your standard windows desktop folder.

I have installed and tested 2 other virtual desktop programs, Virtual Desktop Toolbox and VirtuaWin. Both were very good, (the former in particular was very powerful); still, Dextop is my clear favorite. The strength of this program lies in (a) the great sleek overall design, and (b) a very nice user interface which makes it really easy to customize and navigate.

However, I do have a wishlist:

* Icon management across different desktops could be more streamlined. As it is managing icons is a bit of a hassle, at least initially (you have to select the ‘Desktop Windows’ item on the menu then click the ‘icons’ tab to shuffle icons across desktops). Moreover, even after allocating the icons to the correct desktop(s), a few seemed to revert back inexplicably, but would work when I re-distributed them. It would be far more intuitive if the author had a right-click menu item that simply moved or copied the icon(s) to the desired desktop. See the comments section for a little trick that I use to distribute files/icons. Also ’snap to grid’ for desktop icons doesn’t auto-refresh very well.
* The program should actively ask you if you want to save your profile upon exiting, and if you want this as default. This would have saved me from re-doing a lot of work when I exited the program only to find that my profile wasn’t saved when I re-opened it.

Once introduced to this app I was surprised and impressed; all I could think of was: why did Windows not ship with this functionality built in to begin with?. It is safe to say that this program is one of my ‘must-have’ titles and has made working on my computer a much better experience. I cannot recommend it more highly.

Compatibility: Windows 95/98/ME and NT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista.

Free download Feeware Launchy

Launchy

With Launchy you can search for installed apps rather than browse for them manually in your start menu.

Launchy is invoked/dismissed by a hotkey (alt+space by default). It is pre-set to index your start menu links, but can be customized to index any location on your hard drive for any type of file.

For example, I typically tend to put a lot of files that I am working on on the desktop. I therefore set launchy to index the desktop (and all sub-folders recursively) to the types of files that I want that I typically deal with (xls, csv, jpg, mp3, exe, zip, rar, etc.)
